The Easy Way to Boost Your Immune System

The Easy Way to Boosting Your Immune System

Our bodily immune system works by defending and protecting us against any disease-causing microorganisms. Made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs, it works by seeking out and destroying any possible source of infection.

One way of staying as healthy as you can be is by improving your immune system and boosting its function. It’s much easier said than done but there are so many easy ways to enhance your body’s defense system. Here is a list of things that you can do:

  1. Avoid smoking.

No smoking

We have all seen the warnings. Smoking really does weaken the basic immune defense such as the antibodies and leukocytes in our body. It also increases the risk of getting diseases like bronchitis, lung cancer, and pneumonia. This subsequently lessens the effectivity of our immune system. No doubt, smoking makes your body more prone to disease and infection. Quit smoking!

  1. Drink less alcohol.

Excessive drinking of alcohol, just like smoking, dampens the function of our immune system. Aside from that, disproportionate consumption of alcohol increases our vulnerability to liver disease, alcoholic hepatitis, and cirrhosis. By drinking less alcohol, you make yourself less prone to these ailments and actually help boost your immune system.

  1. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

Eating more fruit

We all know that healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts help provide our body with essential vitamins and minerals. These nutrients help increase the function of our immune system and give our body a much-needed boost.

It was found in a study that increasing your intake of these healthy foods improved antibody response to many diseases. Many vitamins are also antioxidants that can help protect your immune system from damage caused by environmental toxins and other similar factors.

  1. Exercise more!

It is said that our body’s immune system responds to exercise and movement through producing more blood cells that attack bacterial infections. Exercise improves lymphatic function.

By exercising regularly, you help boost your lymphatic function, which works by eliminating toxins and other foreign microbes in your body. When you increase the amount of exercise you do, it has long-term benefits to our body.

  1. Get enough sleep and manage your stress.

Sleep deprivation and increase in stress are linked to the accumulation of cortisol, a hormone that when elevated can actually suppress immune function. Even with increased exercise, you must moderate it by sleeping for 6 to 8 hours a day. Sleeping lets your body recover as well as help preserve the health of your immune system.

  1. Lessen sugar intake.

It’s been found that an intake as little as 10 teaspoons of sugar can already impair our white blood cells and prevent it from killing foreign organisms and toxins. It is recommended then that you switch to a natural sweetener, such as those extracted from the stevia plant, to help boost your immune system.

  1. Soak in the sun more.

Sunlight helps increase the skin’s production of the active form of Vitamin D, which thereafter helps develop immune system function. A decrease in Vitamin D levels contributes to the risk of getting a respiratory infection. With just 30 minutes a day under the sun, you can already get the amount of Vitamin D your body needs to fight off infections!

  1. Take probiotics as a supplement.

Probiotics are natural substances that enhance the activity of friendly bacteria and natural gut microflora in our digestive tract. These actually help in improving absorption of nutrients, digestion, and immune system function.

Probiotics can usually be found in fermented food such as Greek yogurt, milk, miso, and tempeh. By increasing your intake of probiotics, you reduce the risk of gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. An influx of healthy bacteria can certainly help fight disease and keep our natural defense strong.

Keep these reminders and tips in mind as you work your way to a healthier and better you! These are all easy ways to help boost your immune system. Intense changes in lifestyle take a lot of dedication and sacrifice. But at the end of the day, you’ll thank yourself for taking care of your body better.
