Why More Fat Might Be What Your Body Needs to Lose Weight

The average American woman eats more than 66 grams of fat per day. We all focus on our diets, and do our best to make sure we are trim and healthy. To many, the word fat has become almost a bogeyman. We avoid it whenever we can.

That is a problem. It seems counter-intuitive that fat can help you lose weight. Even the word fat generates bad feelings in people.

We are here to tell you that not all fat is bad. There is good fat, and it can help you shed a few pounds. GMP Medical is here to give you the skinny on fat. Read on for some health tips.

Good Fats vs. Bad Fats

There are two types of fats: saturated and unsaturated. Unsaturated fats are the good guys. When you eat them in moderation and as a replacement for saturated fats, it can reduce your cholesterol level, and help reduce the risk of heart disease.

We can break it down even further. Polyunsaturated fats have been shown to bring down triglyceride levels. Omega-3s have serious health benefits.

Saturated fats are the bad guys. First, they have been shown to increase the risk of prostate and colon cancers. Second, their nutritional value is fairly limited. It raises your level of LDL cholesterol, which is the bad kind. Finally, and the biggest reason of all, is that saturated fats are known to increase the risk of heart disease. Heart disease is the number one cause of death amongst Americans.

Unsaturated fats are mostly found in vegetable oils. Omega-3 fatty acids are mostly found in fish, such as salmon or trout. Flaxseed and walnuts are good sources for this nutrient as well.

Saturated fats come through various sources. The most common way people find saturated fats is through meats and dairy. Low-fat dairy products and lean meats are not that bad for you, usually. The real trouble happens when people consume too many artificial trans fats. You should avoid cookies, icing, fried goods, crackers, and packaged snack foods.

Eating Fat and Weight Loss

Saturated and unsaturated fat are different at the molecular level. We are not going to bore you with the literally tiny details. What you should know is that saturated fat is solid at room temperature, and unsaturated fat is a liquid. The liver processes liquids easier than it does solids.

That means that when you eat unsaturated fats, your liver allows the good cholesterol to pass into your system more easily, and the bad parts are filtered out. These bad parts go through your system without causing much harm.

There are other benefits of the good fat. This fat gives you more energy than carbohydrates. A major part of weight loss is exercise, and that energy boost could be perfect for helping you get an extra five minutes on the treadmill. In addition, this sort of fat can help fill you up. You will not feel as hungry, which helps you with portion control.
