Obesity Rates Are Getting Worse
A recent report on obesity finds that America is getting fatter – nearly 40 percent of us are now obese. And with rising obesity rates come an increase in chronic medical conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Obesity is based on your body mass index (BMI), which is a measure of your body fat based on height and weight. The easiest way to determine if you’re obese is with a BMI calculator. All you have to do is enter your height and weight to get your BMI. It’s very simple to do. A BMI above 30 is considered obese. Here are some more report findings:
- Obesity rates are higher among Latinos (47 percent) and blacks (46.8 percent) than among whites (37.9 percent).
- Women are more likely to be more obese than men, 41.1 percent versus 37.9 percent.
- Women are also more likely to to be severely obese, 9.7 percent versus 5.6 percent.
Why Are We Getting Bigger and Bigger?
There’s plenty of blame to go around when trying to pinpoint why so many people are gaining weight. Patients often ask why they’re not losing weight or why they’re gaining. The answer lies in what we’re eating and our lifestyles. Some reasons often cited for weight gain include genetics, larger portion sizes at restaurants in general, easy access to fattening foods and snacks, and many people are not physically active. Healthy snacks are not always available, and when they are available, they tend to be more expensive. Most people know the connection between poor diet, over-eating, and weight gain, but that doesn’t seem to be a deterrent. There are also some serious consequences for obesity affecting all age groups. A study found that obesity-related cancers are rising among millennials. It’s time to get yourself and your entire family healthier.
